I am a temple worker in the Draper Temple. I am pretty excited about this. I have had three different training days. All have been helpful. I will be working Thursday evenings from 4pm to 8pm. I have learned several things that I want to share. Sorry no photo.
On my last session of training, they turned me loose on the phones to talk to real people with real scheduling needs. I did have a trainer behind me to assist me if I needed it. Well one of my calls was a brother from our stake that I know quite well. He is a high councilman assigned to our ward. I am in many meetings with him. His name is Bro. John Brown. Well he indicated who he was and that he had called to schedule. I said, "Is this Brother John Brown from the South Mountain 5th Ward?" He said, "Yes" I then looked over my shoulder to ensure my trainer was not in ear shot. I said, "Well Brother Brown, I have been instructed not to take your calls. There must be a problem with you!" He was then very apologetic. I started to laugh. I couldn't hold it anymore. I then told him, "Oh this is Sister Davis from the 6th ward" We all laughed really hard. I got his goat...good. I hope at some point in time I can be more appropriate.
Now yesterday was the first meeting of all the Draper Temple workers. We were in a stake center for a devotional. There were 1200 of us. It was an impressive sight. I think 99% of them were over the age of 100. I learned three things about working with the "elderly". They are:
1. They are slow. They drive slow. They walk slow. They are slow!
2. They are early. They show up to meetings WAY EARLIER than the rest of us.
3. They do interesting things in the middle of a meeting. We had the "whistler" at our devotional. Right during the middle of a speaker's talk I hear someone whistling. Now this was not the sound of a snore whistle. It was a whistle with a tune. I was so taken back that it took me a few seconds to realize what was going on. Finally I turned to my friend and say, "Do you hear whistling?" She said yes. Then after thinking for a minute, I said, "Is it in the foyer or chapel?" She confirmed my belief. IT WAS WHISTLING IN THE CHAPEL!!!
I think the temple service will suite me great! If I can always find a few things to laugh about then I will be happy.
I will say that the most amazing part of it all was the beginning of the meeting. We started the devotional by singing Page 5 "High on a Mountain Top." It was AMAZING. I couldn't sing for quite a while because the spirit was overwhelming. That song was particularly written for these very times. I cannot explain all that I was feeling. Tears overcame me. I feel very blessed that I can serve the Lord in his house.
